The method is straightforward. You reduce the day, the month, and the year to single digits, add them together, and reduce once more. Reducing means adding the digits of a number until you reach a single digit, with one important exception we will cover below.
Step by step
- Step 1: Write out your full date of birth as numbers, for example 14 March 1990 becomes 14 / 03 / 1990.
- Step 2: Reduce the day. 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5.
- Step 3: Reduce the month. 03 becomes 3.
- Step 4: Reduce the year. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
- Step 5: Add the three reduced numbers together: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9.
For this example the Life Path number is 9. If the final total had been a two-digit number such as 16, you would reduce it once more (1 + 6 = 7).
Master numbers 11 and 22
There is one exception to the reducing rule. When a total along the way comes to 11 or 22, many numerologists pause and keep it as a master number rather than reducing it to 2 or 4.
